Atalaya restaurant: a second life for iroko

Exterior wood restoration and preservation for one of the best-known seafront restaurants in Jávea.

The challenge

Iroko furniture hidden under years of paint, varnish and salt

The restaurant’s pergolas, sofas, planters, windows and tables are made of iroko, one of the most valuable and durable woods for outdoor use. Years of sun, rain and coastal humidity, layers of different paints and varnishes and trapped moisture had completely hidden its natural grain.

The furniture looked tired and was starting to deteriorate. Replacing it would have been expensive and unnecessary.

Our intervention

Back to bare wood, then protected from within

We worked on every piece on site: pergolas, sofas, planters, windows, canopies and high and low tables. Each one was stripped of the damaged layers down to bare wood and sanded smooth.

We then applied technical treatments that nourish the wood, repel water and protect it from UV light, without changing its natural texture or tone.

Bar and tables

Ready for daily use by the sea

The tables showed the most severe wear after years of rain and salty air. With a careful sanding process and a protective seal, every imperfection was removed. The surface is now smooth to the touch and ready for the demands of a busy restaurant.

Planters

A detail that changes the whole terrace

We removed the greenish weathering, the old reed screening and its rusted frame. The natural wood planter and new reed screening now work together, framing the terrace.

Interior furniture

Reused, not replaced

Much of the interior furniture, painted green over the years, could be reused. It only needed a second chance to show the wood it was made of.
